Third suspect in dog case arraigned
9/7/2006

Roger Zampatti, one of three suspects charged in Trinity County with 42 felony charges each of animal cruelty, was arraigned Wednesday in Trinity County Superior Court.

“He turned himself in on the warrant this morning, and he ended up getting arraigned this afternoon,” said Trinity County Deputy District Attorney Eric Heryford.

John and Stacy Malcolm were arraigned Friday on the same charges. Zampatti, like the Malcolms, pleaded not guilty to the animal abuse charges.

All three were released on their own recognizance.

The suspects were charged with an additional felony stemming from the discovery of two marijuana plants on the former property of Roberta Bugenig, where dozens of animals lived and died while allegedly in the care of the Malcolms and Zampatti.

Heryford said a public defender was appointed to represent Zampatti.

The three are scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, when a date will be set for a preliminary hearing.
