Dear Sylvia,

I just thought you ought to know that the logger in the disturbance in Westhaven that you quoted was none other than Chompers Cook who had his equipment vandalized which sunk him so much in debt he has had a hard time recovering, some of which was made pubic by Rob Flanagan in regard to child support payments.

We will get nowhere if we cannot see how we are all connected as beings, brothers and sisters on this planet. If we think the loggers or the police are the problem, then where does that place us? As the bearers of Truth? I doubt we can stand up to Judgement any more than any other group.

What we can learn from this election victory is that we did not stand alone for Paul, that many people who disagree on other issues stood up for him. At a celebration after the party, the feeling of respecting other's opinions was a pleasant shock to many of us. It didn't matter that we had disagreements. We could still enjoy our victory together; it took all of us to make such a resounding win. It will take all of us working together on the common ground of respect for integrity and disrespect for big money in politics to sweep corruption out of our elections. I think the social issues will get addressed as the power issues are taken care of.

Several years back I organized Clergy for Common Ground to try to
create some kind of dialogue between timber interests and
environmentalists. One aspect of that was finding myself from time to
time standing between protesters and loggers at a demonstration. But
the loggers weren't really there. Instead, I was standing between
(basically non-violent) protesters and (armed) law enforcement
officers.

I can still remember especially one demonstration of Fisher Road. The
police ( from CHP, Sheriff's Office, and the nearby police forces)
blocked the road to Palco property. The protester faced them from the
road.

Law enforcement declared that the assembly was illegal and must
disperse immediately. i tried negotiating with the police to no avail,
saying the demonstrators were not violent and had the right of peaceful
assembly. The police lined up and conspicuously shook their
pepper-spray cans. Then they charged the (then kneeling) demonstrators.

I can see why, when the recall came, that law enforcement might have
been confused in thinking they worked for Palco.

In subsequent times, as clergy interest waned, i brought aboard persons
from the county Human Rights Commission. They tried to take on the
mediator's role. But the Supervisors, under the advice of their counsel
dragged their feet about giving the Commission the O K. The Commission
then tried to propose a public Police Review Board. Law Enforcement
said it was unnecessary as they had their own internal ones.

I, too, would suggest working on this again. I suspect that former and
present members of the Human Rights Commission would be willing to join
us with this.

Additionally, the Police Academy is under the College of the Redwoods.
Someone needs to raise questions about their curriculum. Does it make
clear who they work for? I think the President, the Vice President for
Academic Affairs, and the Faculty Senate of C. R. might be helpful in
this.
