Lockyer must choose between Pacific Lumber and Environment

Here?s mine. Richard, can you send out the email address for the Times
Standard letters to the editor page too?

Thanks,

Michael

Dear Editor:

Attorney General Lockyer is correct that we need to protect the environment
(Chronicle op-ed Sunday, April 20, '03). For that reason he should be
helping, not hindering, Humboldt County?s courageous District Attorney Paul
Gallegos in prosecuting Pacific Lumber for allegedly committing fraud during
the Headwaters deal four years ago (Chronicle Story, April 21). Lockyer?s
pro-environment op-ed seems perfectly timed to draw attention away from his
failure to stand-up to Pacific Lumber.

The timber industry gave Governor Davis $450,000 for his reelection
campaign. Lockyer needs to decide this: does he want the support of the
timber industry or the environmental community? He can?t have both.
Especially not after what Governor Davis has allowed logging companies to do
to the forests of the Sierra Nevadas and Humboldt County.

Pacific Lumber likely defrauded not just the people of California but also
the government agencies Lockyer represents. Lockyer should join the lawsuit
against Pacific Lumber, not rush to its defense.
