Committee endorses board candidates
9/7/2005
Local Solutions Political Action Committee has endorsed candidates for the three open seats on the Northern Humboldt Union High School District School Board.
The endorsed candidates are Don Avant, Rebecca Bair Kurwitz and Stephen J. Cole.
“These three people are highly qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds who will bring a thoughtful, open- minded perspective to board deliberations,” said Local Solutions spokesman Michael Twombly.
“The Northern Humboldt District, which governs the Arcata and McKinleyville high schools, has been plagued by controversy in recent years,” according to a Local Solutions news release. “Community members and parents have complained about restrictive policies on comprehensive sex education, restrictions on students’ constitutional rights and an excessive military presence on campuses.
“Don, Rebecca, and Steve will consider such matters with the needs of the whole community in mind, and will deal with such issues in a fair and even-handed manner,” Twombly said.
Residents may meet these candidates on Sept. 24 at a Local Solutions-sponsored community meeting at the Bayside Grange beginning with dinner at 6 p.m.
