Street race case waiting on CHP reports

Investigators are still waiting on reports from the California Highway Patrol concerning the illegal street race and crash that killed a 9-year-old girl.

Judge Bruce Watson granted a motion from the defendant's Anthony Marques Flores, 19, and Jason Bradley Whitmill, 31, Wednesday to continue the matter to Nov. 5.

Humboldt County District Attorney Paul Gallegos said both the defense and the prosecution are waiting on information from the CHP, so his office did not oppose the motion.

”There are still some outstanding reports needed,” he said, adding that CHP has not yet completed an accident reconstruction report.

He said the agency needs to retrieve a black box from one of the cars that will reveal the car's speed at the time of the accident.

On Oct. 6, Flores was allegedly racing Jason Bradley Whitmill on State Route 299 when Whitmill's 2004 Pontiac Sunfire clipped a Chevrolet Tahoe that was driving the same direction.

The Sunfire and Tahoe swerved off the road and down an embankment, where the Tahoe flipped and collided with a utility pole, leaving the Tahoe driver, Debra Quigley, seriously injured, and killing her 9-year-old daughter Nicole.
