Hearing set for Mad River dog suspects

John Malcolm, Stacy Malcolm and Roger Zampatti made their second appearance Wednesday in Trinity County Superior Court for their alleged involvement in the Mad River dog abuse case.

Trinity County District Attorney-elect Michael Harper said the purpose of the Wednesday appearances was to set a date for the preliminary hearing, which will take place Oct. 4 at 9:30 a.m.

The Malcolms and Zampatti face a total 129 felony charges stemming from the starvation and deaths of 42 dogs in Mad River, and the discovery of two marijuana plants on the former property of Roberta Bugenig, who originally owned the dogs.

Harper said the preliminary hearing will be to held to determine whether there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
